  • Western Acupuncture

At Jonathan Clark Physiotherapy, we offer western acupuncture at 19 Oxford Street, Southampton, the Jubilee Sports Centre within the University of Southampton, Knightwood Leisure Centre, Eastleigh, and The Whiteley Surgery, Fareham.

Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes, helping to treat a wide range of health conditions. At Jonathan Clark Physiotherapy we use Western acupuncture, an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture that draws upon current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence based medicine.

Western acupuncture promotes the release of chemicals in the nervous system, some of which are pain relieving and healing. It also results in the relaxation of muscles.

Research supports the effectiveness of acupuncture for pain relief and physiotherapists therefore use it as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

It can also be used for other health conditions such as stress, migraines, chronic tension-type headaches, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia and depression.

If you’re local to Southampton, Eastleigh or Fareham, and would like to book in for acupuncture treatment, you can book in now by contacting our reception team on 02381300260, or alternatively you can Book Online.

  • Shockwave Therapy

At Jonathan Clark Physiotherapy we provide Physiotherapy services for Southampton University and other employers, reducing the business cost of sickness and absence and facilitating patient rehabilitation following injury.

Jonathan Clark Physiotherapy now offers Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) in affiliation with Active Step Podiatry.

Shockwave Therapy is an effective non-surgical treatment for acute, sub-acute and chronic soft tissue injuries, pain and bony conditions. It is most effective for treating long term injuries which have responded poorly to traditional methods of rehabilitation.

What can Shockwave Therapy be used for?

    • Plantar Fasciopathy
    • Heel Spurs
    • Achilles Tendinopathy
    • Shin Pain
    • Patella Tendinopathy
    • Trochanteric Bursitis
    • Tennis Elbow
    • Golfer’s Elbow
    • Calcific Tendonitis of the Rotator Cuff muscles

    How does Shockwave Therapy work?

Shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to target areas. The energy waves gradually disrupt scar tissue and stimulate an inflammatory response, which in turn increases blood flow and enhances cell regeneration. These processes collectively speed up the healing process of that tissue, helping to reduce pain and restore function.

What to expect with Shockwave Therapy treatment?

Following your initial physiotherapy appointment, which includes a comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of your injury, your physiotherapist may advise you on Shockwave Therapy.

Shockwave Therapy requires an average of 3-6 treatment sessions performed weekly in order to effectively treat the conditions detailed above. It is normal to experience some redness, swelling and in some cases, pain, following treatment. This is a normal part of the healing process.

Throughout your course of treatment, your physiotherapist will also provide you with tailored advice on managing your injury, as well as an individualised exercise program focussed on restoring movement and strength, ultimately achieving a speedy and effective recovery.
